Keywords:

The study aimed to identify the nature and type of the relationship between credit risk and financial soundness indicators in Libyan commercial banks during the period 2012–2024, as well as to examine the impact of credit risk on these indicators. The study adopted the descriptive-analytical approach, relying on aggregated data of Libyan commercial banks. Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis were applied using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).The results revealed several key findings: there is a weak positive but statistically insignificant relationship between credit risk and each of the financial soundness indicators of capital adequacy, profitability, and liquidity. A moderate positive but statistically insignificant relationship was found between credit risk and the asset quality indicator. On the other hand, a strong significant negative relationship was identified between credit risk and the management efficiency indicator as one of the financial soundness indicators. The study also showed that credit risk has no significant effect on capital adequacy, asset quality, profitability, and liquidity, while it has a significant impact on management efficiency. Based on these findings, the study recommends that commercial banks carefully assess the financial position of clients before granting credit, in order to minimize credit risks and maintain financial soundness.
